Production of finished textile products is 40% higher this January than in the same month last year, said Vesna Vasiljević, the Secretary of the Association of Textile, Leather and Footwear

At a meeting of the Association, she explained that most of the goods are exported to the European Union, which indicates that the textile and footwear industries should focus on the production of final products.

According to her, in the first month of the 2010, textile and leather goods worth $ 60 million dollars have been exported, which is on the same level as it was last year. 75% of goods have been placed onto the European market. Last year, a total of $ 900 million worth of goods has been exported, which is $ 200 million more if compared to 2008, and the surplus amounted to $ 40 million.

Vesna Vasiljević thinks that the state should have to pay more attention to the manufacturing sectors such as textile industry because it employs 55.000 workers, the products are of high quality and they possess the market. Service production makes 60% of total domestic production. Božidar Stojiljković, said that the textile and leather industry is third Serbian export sector, after agriculture and metal industries.

He pointed out that the main problems of textile and leather producers are bad privatization, large debts, reduced demand, the lack of favorable credit and non-competitive imports.

Additional problems are the indiscriminate control inspection, ambiguous tender procedures and irregularities in public procurement procedures, he concluded, adding that no problems have been solved, except for making regulations on the business of commission actions, which are equal to those in other stores. 1550 textile industries and 320 in leather and footwear industries are registered in Serbia, and they employ a total of 55.000 workers.
